Loll Designs armless bench made from recycled materials.
By Jessica Tzerman
Once upon a time a sustainable manufacturing company called
Loll Designs fashioned comfortable, design-forward outdoor furniture from post-consumer recycled goods. Sounds like some Birkenstock-lover’s fairy tale, right? Well, it’s true, and it’s happening right now at Hawks Boot, Loll’s eco-savvy parent facility near the Minnesota shore of Lake Superior, where craftsman produce natural cutting boards and custom skateparks and then use the same recycled material to make durable, affordable and weather-resistant chairs, benches and other furniture in six yard-brightening colors. They call it diversification with a purpose. We call it smart—particularly since it all happens in a naturally lit and solar heated building constructed from low-impact materials. If more companies operated like that, we’d all live happily ever after.
