When Kathy Zack's children learned about recycling in school, she became interested in finding environmentally safe ways to clean her home. Now the only ingredients she uses are from her health food store, or cooking ingredients found in most homes such as ketchup, club soda, olive oil and vinegar. Here are three of Zack's favorite recipes. Naturally, only 100 percent cotton rags should be used!
All-Purpose Cleaning Solution
Mix together thoroughly and pour into spray bottle: 1 tsp. borax, 1/2 tsp. vegetable-based soap, 3 Tbs. vinegar, 1/8 cup washing soda (like Arm and Hammer's washing soda), 2 cups water
Bronze and Copper Cleaner
Make a paste of equal parts ketchup and Worcestershire sauce (quantity depends on how many pieces are being cleaned). Rub onto metal with cotton cloth. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry completely.
Liquid Soap
In a jar, save the tail end pieces of soap from the shower (the kind that usually get stuck in the drain) and other scrap soap. When you have enough, add water to the jar and soften soap for about two days. Pour mixture into the blender and combine thoroughly. Pour into attractive dispenser to use at the sink.
