Vetrazzo's recycled glass material costs about as much as granite but is more earth-friendly.

When the city of Berkeley, Calif., replaced all their old traffic lights, they didn't just dump the used red, green and yellow glass plates into any old recycling bin. They handed them over to a company called Vetrazzo, which turns used glass into eco-friendly countertop material.

From bathroom vanity tops to shower stalls and flooring, this material can be installed anywhere stone surfaces would go, and adds a touch of eco-friendly artistic flair to your bathroom. "Each slab of Vetrazzo is entirely unique," says designer Deborah Crosby of Green Fusion Design Center. "It has a very different look, like an art piece." With intriguing color palettes from Charisma Blue to Firehouse Red (look for those pieces of embedded traffic lights), Vetrazzo costs about the same as granite, but without the earth-destructive qualities that come from mining.
