Are you getting ready to shop for a new washing machine? Be sure to look at ones that meet the standards of Energy Star, a government-backed energy-efficiency program. Energy Star-qualified washers use an average of 50 percent less energy and 40 percent less water than conventional washers. A qualifying model can save between $45 and $125 in annual energy costs and between $20 and $35 on your water bill.

Evaluate and compare washers’ electricity and water use. (All numbers are averages and vary according to model and usage.)
