We have become a nation of bottled-water drinkers, but quenching that thirst has its cost. Last year the average American consumed 28 gallons of bottled water and, as a result, approximately 86 billion beverage bottles wound up in landfills. Ironically, much of the bottled water we buy has not been found to be healthier than the tap water in our homes. In some cases, bottled water is actually tap water, repackaged to sell.
